I want for once in my life to have power to mold human destiny
"Hedda Gabler," Henrik Ibsen
Refringo
A Drama Of Two Periods in Time
I have always been a "go big or go home" kind of artist, so for my thesis film exiting my undergraduate education from NYU, I have decided to take on one of the most seminal pieces of feminist literature: "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
On this page you will find an abridged version of my pitch deck as well as my director's statement.
Because of Covid-19, all film productions have been halted indefinitely at NYU. Once productions resume, this page will be updated with our indiegogo links and ways to support the project.
Director's Statement
Everyone in this world has felt trapped at some point or another. It could be in a bad job, an apartment lease with an ex, a boring conversation. It could be for five minutes or five decades.
Historically, however, women have been shoved into boxes and trapped for their entire lives. On the surface level, society expects certain things from women. They expect homemakers who know how to cook, clean, and take care of children. Deeper down, the men created these rules in order to stay in power. If the women are busy with what they’ve been assigned, they are easier to control. And at the deepest level, women accept this status quo.
It takes a great deal of courage to fight against the power of those who sit on top of the world.
“Refringo” speaks to those who have always been spoken over. It speaks to women who have been told that this the way of the world, and the abuse that comes with it is acceptable and okay. It invites them to stand up, not just for themselves, but for the fighters that came before them, the victims next to them, and the champions of the future.
